The Delayed Reaction
Adrenaline Lies. Your Body Will Catch Up — And So Will the Insurance Company.
You told the officer you were fine. You drove home. You went to work the next morning. And then, two days later, you couldn't turn your head.
This is not unusual. It is, in fact, one of the most common patterns in auto accident injury and one of the most commonly used arguments against accident victims by insurance adjusters.
When your body experiences a violent physical event, the sympathetic nervous system activates immediately. Adrenaline and cortisol flood your system. Your heart rate rises, your senses sharpen, and — critically — your pain response is suppressed. This is a survival mechanism that has nothing to do with whether you were actually injured. It is your body prioritizing function over sensation in a moment of threat.
That mechanism wears off. Usually within 24 to 72 hours. By then, the inflammatory response has set in. The soft tissue damage that was masked by adrenaline begins to make itself known. The whiplash in your neck. The disc compression in your lower back. The shoulder injury from bracing against the steering wheel. These don't announce themselves at the scene of the crash — they announce themselves in your bedroom at 2 a.m. three nights later.

Dr. Arkam Rehman, a specialist in minimally invasive spine treatments, explains in Episode 4 of Not Another TV Lawyer how delayed onset pain is a medical reality that requires medical documentation to overcome legally.
Spinal injuries in particular tend to follow this delayed pattern. A herniated disc, for example, may not produce significant symptoms immediately. But within days or weeks, as inflammation increases and the disc presses on nerve roots, the pain can become incapacitating. By the time you seek treatment, weeks may have passed. And in Florida, the 14-day PIP window may have already closed.
Dr. Rehman's specialty — minimally invasive spine procedures — exists precisely for patients who have crash-related injuries that weren't caught or treated in time. Nerve blocks, epidural injections, and targeted interventional procedures can address the structural damage that conservative care alone can't resolve. But the documentation trail to support that level of treatment has to exist. It starts with your first medical visit, not your third.
